Receding Gums Treatment

Receding Gums Treatment

The weakening of the tissue that makes up the gums to the point that they begin to reduce in volume, progressively exposing a greater part of the tooth’s root, is called gingival recession. This condition can also be referred to as receding gums.
The gingival recession over time deteriorates the dental pieces and mainly affects the anterior teeth and premolars. The gums are progressively reduced, and in the end, it gives the sensation of having long teeth or that they move. Unfortunately, this gum deterioration will eventually cause tooth loss, and the only solution is to replace missing teeth with dental implants.

Tobacco

Tobacco smoke causes inflammation of the gums and reduces the blood that reaches the mucous tissues. This way, bacteria advance more easily, aggravating the patient’s periodontal disease. Tobacco stains the teeth yellow, darkens the gums, and is very harmful to health. The tissue of the gums is weakened in patients who are smokers since nicotine and the toxic substances of tobacco stimulate the production of cavities in the teeth and the resorption of bone in the mouth.

Hard brushing or bad brushing habits

Brushing harder or with a harder toothbrush than necessary can hurt your gums, causing them to diminish. Brushing our teeth should be soft without force or squeezing. By brushing harder, we will better remove tartar from our teeth, quite the opposite.

Bruxism

Bruxism, or the involuntary habit of grinding the teeth, seriously damages the teeth and gums by clenching the teeth with great force, especially at night when we sleep. Bruxism stresses the muscles and joints and causes swollen or weakened gums. If a patient is a continuous bruxist, this part of the teeth may suffer from receding gums. In addition, bruxism will cause the movement of the dental pieces that will weaken. To avoid damaging the gums or teeth, your dentist may recommend putting a splint on at night.

Treatment options for Receding Gums

Your mouth is not in excellent health if your gums are receding. It's crucial to improve the state of your dental health. Cleanings at the dentist's office can do this. You might also use a fluoride-containing varnish. Your teeth get a boost from this and become stronger. It's crucial to prevent further gum.

1. Consultation

Our dental hygienist first inspects and diagnoses your gums and then gives you comprehensive advice about brushing and cleaning your teeth. After that we make a customize treatment plan with you to enhance your oral health.

2. Topical Antibiotics

If the gum recession is caused by periodontal disease, our dental hygienist will work with you to improve how you clean your teeth. Under local anesthesia, scaling and root planning (deep dental cleaning) can be performed.

3. Pinhole Method

Gums are forced down from the inside with a hook after a hole is cut in them. Then, to maintain the gums, strips of collagen tissue are put to the interior of the gums (collagen is an imperative component of the body's connective tissue);

4. Gum Graft

A portion of tissue from the roof of your mouth or from neighboring healthy gum tissue is initially removed by your periodontist before performing a gum graft. They then fasten it to the region where your gums have started to recede.

What are the possible solutions when you already have receding gums?

The best solutions start with a diagnosis by a dentist specializing in the treatment of gums. Once it is detected that your gums are increasingly receding, establishing the main cause, based on this diagnosis, is extremely important. Then, your dentist will determine the appropriate treatment solution.

  • Receding gums due to rough brushing: education must be initiated so our patients adopt the correct tooth brushing technique.
  • Due to poor dental hygiene: diseases caused by poor dental hygiene, such as gingivitis or pyorrhea, require a treatment called dental curettage, which is based on the elimination of bacteria and solids (tartar) which accumulate around the tooth and between the gums.
  • Faced with advanced gum recession due to bad habits (poor hygiene, tobacco). Cosmetic periodontal surgery is the only solution for the critical state of your receding gums. Among the techniques used to restore a healthy appearance to your gums are:
    • Gum lift: in which the patient undergoes microsurgery on their gums. This technique consists of stretching part of the gum to cover its exposed root
    • Gum micrograft: when the case is extreme, this option is used in which a minimal fraction of the palate tissue is removed and then grafted to cover your gum. This procedure usually requires a few stitches (two or three) in the palate.
  • Receding gums due to bruxism: when a patient presents deterioration in their teeth, the enamel of their teeth commonly has fallen, exposing the dentin. Even under normal brushing, your gums can recede, in which case, a relief plate is used to help stop this unconscious act of teeth grinding. Subsequently, the extent of the damage is diagnosed.

Receding Gum

Receding gums are not only an aesthetic problem for our smile but also cause deterioration in the tooth that can cause permanent loss. One of the major causes of receding gum is brushing too hard. Other common causes include:

Periodontal disease and poor dental hygiene

A lack of proper dental hygiene almost always brings on periodontal disease. In its initial stage, gingivitis manifests itself, and later, if a dentist does not treat it, it will lead to periodontitis. As periodontal disease progresses, it produces a recession in your gums and permanent tooth loss, even in more advanced cases.

Periodontal treatment and periodic check-ups by the specialist are essential to maintain the dental piece and stop the gums from receding through conservative dentistry treatments.

Can reverse receding gums cause tooth sensitivity?

Receding gums are one of the primary causes of dental sensitivity. This is due to the possibility of the soft dentine inside the tooth becoming visible as the gums start to recede. Millions of microscopic channels pass through the dentin to the tooth’s core. Something you eat or drink that is cold, hot, sweet, or sour can trigger the stimulus that sensitive teeth are prone to.
